Foundation Appaloosas have always been, and always will be, my favorite breed of horse, but after having ridden gaited horses here in the U.S.A I loved how they rode and how comfortable they were so when I found out there was within the tennesee walker breed a small handful of appaloosa colored horses it was like the best of both worlds for me and I decided I had to have one (or two!)
A few years ago I heard about a very unusual stallion. A registered TENNESSEE WALKING HORSE with appaloosa coloration. He had been bred in Oklahoma, then sold on to Pennsylvania and New York before finally making his home in Texas. His dam appeared to be a white-grey mare, however after giving birth to several appaloosa colored foals - causing much interest - she was deemed to be a 'throwback' - from some distant appaloosa ancestor. Her most notable highly colored foal to date, "Admirals Ponca Patches" is the sire of my two tennessee walking horses that I recently purchased from Neo Equus Ranch, in Caldwell, Texas. It seems that this appaloosa gene is carried forward from generation to generation until the right combination of genes/bloodlines brings out the appaloosa coat pattern.
I was pleased to find two of 'Admirals' progeny for sale, and bought them both. Full brother and sister, the first a 2007 black non-characteristic appaloosa gened filly and the second is a 2008 black colt with all the appaloosa characteristics of white sclera around both eyes, mottled skin, roaning in coat and white and black striped hooves. I am hoping as they mature they will get more appaloosa coloration. Right now I am happy just to have such unusual and interesting horses in my pasture.

the above photo is of 'john henry' at 8 mths old, he is turning blue roan with black freckley spots
over his rump, sides and shoulders, and appears to be getting white spots too... I cant wait to
see him all grown up! Remember, this is a registered tennesee walking horse! cool huh !
'John Henry' is coat color tested at the university of california davis, he is EEaa which is homozygous black
with no agouti or bay genes and I also tested him for the grey gene which he does not have (NN).
John Henry - is registered with several breed associations:
TWHBEA (tennessee walking horse association) #20804966
WHA (Walkaloosa Horse Associaton) # 0809
ISHR (International Spotted Horse Registry) # AP473

with more registrations to be added.
here is the latest photo of
Apps John Henry NER, taken 4 September 2009, it had been raining lightly so his rump spots arent showing up very well, but what a handsome boy he is becoming, and dont he know it !
